Standard FR denim uses 100% cotton with no give, while FR stretch jeans like NKE's 10.5oz, 98% cotton, 2% spandex blend add flexibility that moves with the body during bending, kneeling, or climbing. The spandex content doesn't affect the flame-resistant treatment, so you get the same protection with added mobility.
Look for styles with a spandex or stretch-woven blend, such as NKE's Stretch Basic or Stretch Fashion Denim, both built with 2% spandex for extra give through the seat and thighs. This reduces fabric binding and restriction during repetitive movement compared to rigid 100% cotton denim.
Most FR stretch denim is engineered to meet flash fire (NFPA 2112) and arc flash (NFPA 70E) standards, but the exact rating depends on the specific fabric weight and construction. Always check the ATPV and CAT rating on the product page to confirm it matches your job site's requirements.
Wash FR stretch jeans in cold or warm water with a mild detergent, avoiding chlorine bleach, fabric softeners, and starch, since these can weaken the flame-resistant treatment and reduce the fabric's stretch recovery. Turning jeans inside out before washing also helps preserve the color and the spandex fibers over time.
10.5oz stretch denim balances mobility with reasonable durability, making it suitable for most day-to-day industrial tasks, though it's lighter than the heaviest non-stretch FR denims on the market. For jobs involving constant abrasion against rough surfaces, pairing stretch jeans with reinforced knees or choosing a heavier weight elsewhere in your gear can extend overall durability.
Both use the same 10.5oz, 98% cotton, 2% spandex fabric and offer identical flame-resistant protection, but they differ in cut and styling — the Basic style leans toward a traditional straight fit, while the Fashion style offers a more tailored, modern silhouette. The choice comes down to personal fit preference rather than a difference in protection level.
Like most cotton-based denim, FR stretch jeans can experience minor shrinkage after the first few washes, though the spandex content helps the fabric hold its shape better than 100% cotton over time. Washing in cold water and avoiding high-heat drying helps minimize shrinkage and keeps the stretch recovery intact longer.
